I am a Costa Rican lawyer and notary, a career diplomat, and an artist. I represented Costa Rica at the United Nations during the country's term on the Security Council, then served six years as Consul in New York. In 2016 I started #5MinuteBeachCleanup — the idea that anyone, anywhere, can give the coast five minutes — and it spread to more than 160 countries and 35,000 registered cleanups. As Operations Director at BIONIC I turned recovered marine plastic into high-performance textiles for O'Neill, Moncler, G-Star Raw and H&M Conscious, and opened Costa Rica's first marine-plastic recovery centre.
Soy abogada y notaria costarricense, diplomática de carrera y artista. Representé a Costa Rica ante las Naciones Unidas durante el período del país en el Consejo de Seguridad, y luego fui cónsul en Nueva York durante seis años. En 2016 empecé #5MinuteBeachCleanup — la idea de que cualquier persona, en cualquier lugar, puede darle cinco minutos a la costa — y llegó a más de 160 países y 35.000 limpiezas registradas. Como Directora de Operaciones en BIONIC convertí plástico marino recuperado en textiles de alto rendimiento para O'Neill, Moncler, G-Star Raw y H&M Conscious, y abrí el primer centro de recuperación de plástico marino de Costa Rica.
Today I run the 5 Minute Beach Cleanup Foundation, am founding the environmental-law practice Litoral, and exhibit Fósiles del Antropoceno — made with plastiglomerates, plastic burned or fused by heat with sand, wood and shell into a single body, collected on Costa Rica's Pacific coast. The material is gathered, not manufactured: selected, documented and mounted, never altered.
Hoy dirijo la Fundación 5 Minute Beach Cleanup, estoy fundando la firma de derecho ambiental Litoral, y expongo Fósiles del Antropoceno — hecha con plastiglomerados: plástico quemado o fusionado por el calor con arena, madera y conchas hasta formar un solo cuerpo, recolectado en la costa pacífica de Costa Rica. El material se recoge, no se fabrica: se selecciona, se documenta y se monta, sin intervenirlo.
I am unusual on a panel because I have argued the law, negotiated the text, run the supply chain, and made the object. Audiences get the whole chain, not one link of it.
